These hand embroidered, one of a kind trajes (huipil and skirt set) are worn by the women and girls of Oaxaca (Tehuanas) on special occasions, and in ceremony. Frida Kahlo often wore these colorful garments to honor the traditional hand crafts of indigenous Mayan women.

The Gancho style embroidery (punch or hook needle embroidery) found on this huipil is the most difficult technique to master of all the types of Tehuana embroidery.

This dress would be great for any dressy occasion, or give it a playful twist by pairing the top with capris or a short skirt and sandals. It would also look great with jeans and boots.

Because these items are hand-crafted by local artisans using traditional techniques, slight variations may occur. Note that colors may vary according to each display monitor.
