A ruana? What is that? Picture a poncho that is open in the front. Originating in Columbia, the ruana was traditionally worn by men. Later women wanted in on the fun, and today this style is worn worldwide by both men and women. It is usually worn simply open in the front, yet you can create a variety of looks by draping it different ways, or using accessories such as scarves, belts, or pins. For example, try a jazzy variation by tossing one side over the shoulder.

Made of handwoven cotton, this medium weight textile is very soft. The rich blue color is obtained through a complex, time consuming dying process using a dye made from leaves of the indigo plant which are dried, then fermented and blended with ash and residue from the old vats. Each piece results in a unique shade of blue, based on a number of variables involved in the intricate dying process. Dying fabric with indigo is a longstanding tradition. Before the advent of synthetic dyes, the highly prized indigo fabric was a sign of prestige and abundance throughout Africa, and the dying process a guarded secret.

Due to the way strip cloth is assembled, it is natural that over time some areas along the seams may separate. It is minor imperfections such as these that imbue these vintage, collectible textiles with unique character, shaping the individual personality of each piece.

Please note that all our products are meticulously handmade by master artisans one piece at a time. Due to this process, there may be a slight variation from one item to the next. Such variations are inherent in the manufacturing of handmade products, so you may expect minor distinctions that will make your purchase special and truly one of a kind. Note that colors may vary according to each display monitor.

Please note that the jewelry in some of the photos is not included with purchase of the Ruana, but can be purchased separately if still available.
